While this method is less effective, the one way link you will get from the directories is a safer way to go rather than using reciprocal linking. The reason is that your site normally will not get penalized from a bad link pointing towards you.

After all, you can only control your links that are pointing to other websites and not the other way around. If you are doing reciprocal linking with a 'bad' website, Google will penalize you too since you 'endorse' their website by providing a link back to their site. With this method, make sure you only submit your website once to each website directory.

And lastly, the best way to increase your link popularity is by using article marketing. This is a very simple process, you simply create an article about the topic of your website, then add a couple of links in the resource box that point back to your own website. And submit them to every article directory you can find.
